Irish Music Magazine once described Paddy O’Brien thus: “At once a wakeup call and a reminder of the things that matter in Irish traditional music.” Nathan Gourley has earned high accolades as one of the tradition’s finest young players, recognized for “honest to goodness traditional fiddling” and for finding “new avenues of musical expression.” Dáithí Sproule’s sensitive guitar accompaniment on this recording is, as usual, without peer.
“Bright and Early” features 16 tracks with Paddy O’Brien and Nathan Gourley playing what has become an O’Brien signature style—an amazing note-for-note unison between accordion and fiddle—with tasty backup from Dáithí Sproule on guitar. The recording represents a labor of love, and more than four years of concentrated rehearsals.
This CD release concert will offer a delightful mixture of stories and rare traditional music from the new album, tunes carefully handpicked from the likes of legendary Irish music masters such as Tommy Potts, Paddy Fahey, Ed Reavy, Michael Coleman, and John Doherty).
Many of these tunes have been at the back of Paddy’s mind for many years, and he revives and reinterprets them with wonderful support from Nathan on fiddle. The new recording also features one of Paddy’s own compositions as well, a old-style clan march entitled ‘The March of the Jacobites.’
