The Paddy O’Brien Tune Collection

“Like having a master class in your living room...”

The Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection is a historic compilation of 1,500 Irish tunes from the repertoire of Paddy O'Brien of County Offaly, an All-Ireland accordion champion and one of the world's outstanding performers of Irish traditional music. In more than five decades as a musician, Paddy has gained a reputation as a walking encyclopedia of Irish music; it's estimated that he carries in his head the melodies of more than 3,000 Irish tunes. Created especially for serious students of Irish music, this unique collection can help today’s players learn Irish music the way it was traditionally handed down—by ear.

Paddy talks with Siobhán Dugan about the Paddy O’Brien Tune Collection, and his unprecedented achievement of setting down 1,500 tunes for posterity, including set dances, slides, slow airs, harp tunes, hop jigs, single jigs, double jigs, slip jigs, walking marches and clan marches, and reels. This video is a companion piece to Siobhán's original article in Trasna an Ghabhail, the newsletter of the Celtic Junction, in August 2014.
